First Lady Meets Kenyans Living In New York

Kenyans living in New York have been lauded for their exemplary effort in bringing out the best of Kenya to an international audience. Speaking during a reception hosted by the Ministry of Devolution and Planning and the Kenya Mission to the United Nations, speakers drawn from the diplomatic core as well as high level Kenyan government officials, praised Kenyans working at the UN as well as those working in New York for the numerous positive mentions Kenya had gotten during the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. First Lady Margaret Kenyatta encouraged Kenyans living in the diaspora and especially those working at the United Nations to continue with their exemplary effort of putting a positive image of the country on the world map. On Beyond Zero, the First Lady urged every Kenyan and friend of Kenya to extend a lending hand to the underprivileged communities living in marginalized areas so that all Kenyans could have equal opportunities to achieve their dreams. The colourful reception which featured Kenyan music, took place at the United Nations headquarters and was graced by dignitaries drawn from across the globe. It was also attended by Rachael Ruto, Macharia Kamau, the Kenya Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning, Anne Waiguru.

The First Lady arrived in New York, United States of America, Wednesday, to join other world leaders for the fifty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

The meeting is taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 9th to 20th March 2015. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are attending the session.

The main focus of the session is the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, including current challenges that affect its implementation and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
