Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, It gives me great pleasure to join you today during this important fourth edition of the International Floriculture Trade Expo (IFTEX). I welcome all our visitors and flower growers from the entire continent represented here today and also warmly welcome all the representatives from other countries. This Expo has attracted visitors from more than 20 countries who will be interacting with close to 200 exhibitors in the floriculture industry. Besides this particular Expo which is now in the fourth consecutive year, Kenya has also continued to popularize its floriculture products by participating in other international flower industry promotional events organized in other parts of the world. I wish to reassure all the consumers of our highly acclaimed flowers that the country continuously strives for responsible and safe production of cut flowers. We also strive to protect, conserve the natural environment and promote the welfare of all farm staff for sustainability. In total, the entire sub sector provides for over 90,000 livelihoods directly and over 500,000 indirectly through gainful employment. Over 60% of employees in the sector are women. I mention women because this is a subject that is very close to my heart. I wish to encourage all the flower producers, especially the large scale investors, to continue supporting women by providing them with a conducive environment to work in and to invest in their health. I wish to appreciate the role of the Kenya Flower Council who have in recent years, sustained campaigns to promote a local culture for flowers. These promotions not only provide jobs amongst innovative and business-minded young Kenyans, but also showcase Kenya as an internationally acknowledged flower producing country. Key activities around Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other social events including marriage ceremonies are never complete without flowers. Flowers bring a touch of eternity, joy, love and beauty to the world. It is now my pleasure to declare this Expo officially open. Thank you and God bless you.
