The National Treasury has picked the Inspector General of Police to be the Accounting Officer of the National Police Service.

This follows an order issued by President William Ruto who noted that the move would accord the Police independence in discharging its duties.

In a memo to Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai, Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani said the new direction, which took effect from September 15, 2022, was in line with the powers conferred on him by Section 67 of the Public Finance Management Act, 2012.

“You are hereby designated the accounting officer…you are required to keep your Cabinet Secretary updated on all financial matters of the ministry and provide information and reports as may be directed by the Cabinet Secretary,” explained Mr Yatani.
